What Are The Habits Of Successful People

1. Wake Up Early

Most people are aware that waking up at the same time every day and going to bed at the same time is good for our bodies. The key to be a successful entrepreneur is about managing your time well and this includes waking up early.

For a long time when people would ask me about my daily routine, I would feel odd talking about it. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m an introvert and I feel like it’s not relevant. However, I have the same typical routines every day. For example I wake up, drink water with an ice cube of lemon, turmeric and black pepper; I do my workout, I eat breakfast, do my makeup, drink a coffee and then wake my children up, if they’re not already awake.

Getting out of bed early means that I get the most out of my day, if you want to have a good worklife balance then waking up early in the morning will really help. There are only so many hours in the day and when you work for yourself you need to ensure that you get the most out of your day and the best way to achieve this, is waking up early.

2. Exercise Daily

One of the most common habits with highly successful people is that they take care of their bodies whether it is eating a healthy diet and/or they exercise daily.

Although this daily habit is not at all related to business, this is one of the parts of your day which will directly improve your health. It’s so easy to forget about your body, especially when you’re busy and running your own business but you really musn’t. I’ve learnt a lot about a healthy lifestyle over the last few years and what we eat and drink really matters, arguably more than exercise.

However, exercise has so many benefits as well. Working out regularly can improve your sleep, strengthens your bones, strengthens your muscles, improves your metabolic rate; and can reduce anxiety and depression in some people.

It doesn’t matter so much when you take the time to exercise, just find the time of the day that works for you and is at a level of intensity which is sustainable. It certainly helps if you enjoy it too. I haven’t always enjoyed working out daily but now it’s such an important part of my day that I will only miss a workout if I feel unwell or if I know that I will be doing an alternative such as walking a lot.

It might sound really obvious but if you become ill or get an injury as a business owner this can be a problem. Particularly if you are at the stage with your business where there are still tasks that you are unable to outsource. Ensuring that you take good care of your body will help you to be much more productive as it’s even been said to boost cognitive function.

3. Keep Learning

This is probably the only tip that is actually related to business in my list of the top 5 daily habits of successful entrepreneurs. I’ve heard a lot of people say that highly successful people read a lot and I don’t think that’s strictly true. I think that thriving business owners tend to have a deep need to keep learning and not specifically from reading.

We live in a time where in the Western world we have access to so much information at our fingertips. If you want to learn a particular subject to improve your business or knowledge you can take a course online, sometimes for quite a low price too. There are even places such as LinkedIn and Skillshare where you can learn quite a lot of new skills for free.

Once you’ve been a business owner for a while it can be easy to assume that you know everything, but the most successful people will always be trying to learn more and find better ways of doing things for their business.

Along these same lines, staying up to date with what is new and changing within your industry will really help too. A business that grows and adapts to the current times is much more likely to remain successful, than a business which is stuck in its ways and stagnant.

4. Take Breaks

It might sound counterproductive to suggest taking breaks in an article about daily habits of successful people, however this is so so important too. When you’re an entrepreneur you’re more likely to be spending long periods of your day on your computer and sometimes even on social media. All of this can increase your stress levels and make it more likely that you suffer from burnout.

Take regular breaks from your computer and work in general. I found that continuing to work once my children were in bed was not good for my overall wellbeing. I now set myself clear boundaries on when to switch off from work and take a break on a daily basis. I do sometimes get ideas in the evening and I usually make a note of these to deal with the following day.

The same applies to social media, if you find that quite a lot of your day is promoting your business on social media, you may benefit from settng yourself a certain time of the day when you take a break from socials. Remember that most things can wait and taking those well needed breaks could improve your creativity and your overall wellbeing.

In the first year of owning your own business, a holiday (vacation) might not be a possibility but if you get the chance… take it! Sometimes a break is just what you need to improve your stress levels and get inspired. It’s much better to take that break than reach burnout, not-to-mention the fact that you’ll be more likely to make errors if you’re overwhelmed and stressed.

5. Make A Plan For Tomorrow

The most successful entrepreneurs are good at managing their time and will generally make a plan or to-do list for the following day. If your morning routine includes your plan for the day and that works for you, that’s fine. Don’t feel that you need to change it. However, the most successful entrepreneurs will set a plan for the next day. That way when you wake up you know what’s on your schedule, what needs to be completed and achieved. You can then start your day feeling relaxed and ready to achieve your goals.

This plan doesn’t need to be set in stone though. Sometimes you might need to shift things around a bit, but having that plan in place initially will really help you to prepare for the day.

Even getting prepared for the following day including making a lunch, preparing your clothes etc means you’re less likely to forget the important things and when you wake up all blurry eyed you’ll know you can handle the day much more efficiently.. perhaps after you’ve had a coffee.. if that’s your thing.

As a self confessed workaholic, I find it difficult to switch off. Perhaps you can relate? We live in a world where if you take a break or relax for a bit, you feel that you have to justify this to yourself or even to others. Rest and learning to switch off is so important and those daily habits will not just improve your mood but also allow you to be the best version of yourself, for your business and clients.
